定期購読者が中心のビジネスモデルで安定度は高いはずなのに、どうして不況の影響が大きいのか。ある社員が部数減の真相を解説する。「編集長の説明によると、『押し紙』的なものをなくしたから、というのが原因だそうです。これまで、無料でバラ撒いていたものが相当数あった、というのです」
『押し紙』とは新聞業界用語で、販売店に対して、売れる見込みもないのに押し付け的に買い取らせて卸し、ＡＢＣ部数をかさ上げすることを指す。たとえば産経新聞は押し紙施策を転換したため、205万部（2008年12月）→163万部（2009年12月）へと1年で20％も部数を減らし、業界では話題になった。この20％は、末端読者から料金を徴収できていない部数。ＡＢＣ部数を実力以上に増やして広告料金を吊り上げることが狙いだったが、不況による広告費カットのなか、その効果も薄れた。
日経ＢＰは直販モデルなので販売店に押し込むタイプの押し紙ではないが、料金を徴収できない部数、という点では同じ。販促キャンペーンなどと称して末端読者にバラ撒くことで刷り部数を維持していたが、不況で有無を言わさず広告宣伝費が削減されるなか、かさ上げ分の印刷・配送にかかるコスト増のデメリットが大きくなった。そもそも、お金を払わないのに送られてくる雑誌は読まずに捨てられる可能性が高いので、広告主を欺いてきた、とも言える。
